Alright, so here's a rumor going on in the deep dark parts of the web I have a hard time believing. Steven Soderbergh, the famed and respected Hollywood director/producer is apparently working on a film version of Billy Beane's guide to budget baseball Moneyball, written by Michael Lewis. Those who follow the A's know they have to find bargain players before they get noticed and their price explodes and they play for the Yankees. This is the essence of Moneyball: The Art of Winning in an Unfair Game. Do not chase big name players, chase guys who get on base. Doesn't seem like much of a movie story to me, but hey, I don't own a studio for good reason. Apparently the story will follow Beane as he builds a contender out of nothing. If the movie news isn't big enough, guess who might be playing Beane? BRAD "The Ultimate Sex Symbol" PITT! Due out in 2011, the movie will follow the A's 2002 season where they piled up a 20 game win streak and finished first in the American League West with players like Barry Zito, Eric Chavez, Mark Mulder and Miguel Tejada. Former A's manager Art Howe is on board too. Comedian Demetri Martin will play former A's assistant GM Paul DePodesta. The A's also lost in the division series that year to the Minnesota Twins, sort of an anticlimactic end for a film and definitely for A's fans. Maybe they could alter history and do a dramatic slow motion clip of Derek Jeter tossing out Jeremy Giambi at home plate, at least that would capture the disappointment for the fans.
