The Giants won game one of their series against the Detroit Tigers July first. The heart of the action came in the 9thinning when both team’s offenses came alive. In the end, the Giants got 3 runs in the 9thto go ahead. Detroit tried to answer by loading up the bases in the bottom of the inning and got 2 runs across, but San Francisco was able to get out of the Jam to get the win.
San Francisco improved their record to 47-36 on the year and brought their away record to even at 23-23. The Giants Brian Wilson got credit for the victory and improved his record to 6-1 on the year. Jeremy Affeldt came through at the end of the game to get his 3rdsave of the year. In all, the Giants got their 4 runs from 11 hits.
Detroit dropped their record to 44-39 on the year and in turn dropped their home record where they have been successful with a 26-18 record. Jose Valverde got credit for the loss, which dropped his record to 2-3 on the year. The Tigers got 3 runs on 10 hits on the game. They were able to load the bases up in the bottom of the 9thand got 2 runs across the plate. San Francisco was able to hold on and pitch out of the jam however to end the Tigers rally.
Game 2 of the series will be July 2nd at 7:05 PM ET. On the Hill for the Giants will be Barry Zito. Zito is just 1-1 on the year with an unimpressive 4.95 earned run average. Detroit will start Max Scherzer who is in search of his 10th win of the season. Currently he is 9-3 with a 4.47 ERA. Zito hopes to get back to dominance and ruin Scherzer’s shot at 10 wins.
