The 49ers did last Sunday what few teams get a chance to say during the course of NFL season. That is because the 49ers won on the road at Lambeau Field in Wisconsin against the Packers. San Fran was able to win with a great run game and more-than-manageable throwing game from Alex Smith. Smith ended the game with a huge passer rating and was very effective thanks to the fantastic running game led by Frank Gore. The win should give San Francisco all the confidence in the world to get over the hump and get to the Super Bowl this season.
Alex Smith showed that he can more than just manage a football game. He finished the game 20 of 26 for 211 yards and two touchdowns. Most of this should be credited to the rushing game that saw Gore carry just 16 times, but for 112 yards. That is a 7 yard average, which will make many passing games vastly improved. Other than Gore, the team gathered up 74 more rushing yards between 4 other players.
Helping the 49ers offense cause was a fantastic defense that shut down any Packer run game. The Packers were held to just 45 yards rushing as 49er defenders flew all over the field Sunday. San Francisco opened up many eyes with their recent success and will now look to build upon that as they will face Detroit in week 2 on Sunday Night Football on NBC. Detroit, nor anyone else, will have no chance if the 49ers play like this again.
